Chapel Hill North-South BRT Study

DK&P and AECOM conducted a 4-day community design workshop in July 2019 to discuss station area design and future land use along the North-South Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in the Town of Chapel Hill.
The North-South BRT is planned for an 8.2 mile segment of one of the town’s busiest thoroughfares, passing through downtown and into surrounding neighborhoods, connecting employees, students, residents, and visitors to homes, workplaces, and other destinations.
The workshop included a Town Council Work Session, community input session, open house hours, and focus group events for property owners and developers, business owners, cyclists, commuters, seniors, and accessibility advocates. The team gathered input about community preferences for buildings, public spaces, and infrastructure at station areas, and drew illustrations of potential future conditions that demonstrate community priorities. Input from the workshop was used to define transit-supportive design planning principles and inform station design and continued planning for the BRT corridor.
