A Community-based Vision for Resilience and Recovery

Part of the city-wide Long Term Recovery Planning Project, the Strategic Vision for Downtown aims to direct future growth while also preserving the city’s history, connection to the waterfront, and strong sense of community, providing a foundation for Panama City to become the premier city in the Panhandle.

In October 2018, Hurricane Michael caused historic levels of damage; Panama City is determined to rebuild and grow stronger, following a community-led vision for the future. The City initiated a Long Term Recovery Plan, focusing on recovery and resiliency in four areas: Safety & Security, Economy, Quality of Life, and Infrastructure. The six-month planning process has included workshops, focus groups, town hall meetings, and a two-week charrette process. Community priorities for Downtown established Ten Cornerstone Ideas that set the stage for public improvements and private investment.

Adopted in 2019, this plan was awarded a 2020 CNU Charter Award.
